1. PLACES / TWELVE MILE CREEK TRAIL - WALNUT PARK SEGMENT
The Twelve Mile Creek Trail through Walnut Park is one of my favorite trails. It combines hillsides, flat areas, creeks, small bridges and a large suspension bridge that crosses state lines. The trail itself is part of the expansive Carolina Thread Trail system that encompasses 15 counties in the Carolinas. Twelve Mile Creek Trail has multiple access points for you to use depending on the length you wish to go. I have found that starting along the intersection of Carrington Drive and north side of Twelve Mile Creek gives a well rounded hike. There is on-street parking near the intersection and the trailhead marker can be clearly seen from the road. It is a moderate 2.75mi out and back hike. The trail consists of natural, crushed gravel and some boardwalked areas. At the suspension bridge there are beautiful benches on both sides where you can take a break. It is at this point of the trail where we typically turn around, however, you can keep going past the bridge on a much narrower trail. A really fun hike for all ages!

Helpful Trail Information

Creek / River, Shaded Hike, Viewpoint, and Wildlife Viewing The main highlight of this trail is the 170ft suspension bridge that crosses from South Carolina to North Carolina. We have encountered many turtles, frogs and a few snakes along the trail. The flatter spots in the trail are wide and perfect for letting kids take the lead.
