1. PLACES / ROCKS STATE PARK - FALLING BRANCH/KILGORE FALLS
The Falling Branch area of Rocks State Park is located about five miles north of the main park on a separate 67-acre parcel of land. It is home to the 17-foot high Kilgore Falls, which is Maryland’s second highest vertical drop waterfall. This non-developed, environmentally sensitive area has a serene hiking trail leading back to the waterfall. Parking can be difficult so plan ahead. Park in lot 1026 Falling Branch Road Take the path at the end of the lot and head down hill. You’ll cross a small foot bridge and make a right. Follow this path downhill until you reach the Deer Creek. Cross the creek and be careful of footings (without fail I get wet every time). Once across turn right and follow the trail to the view of the falls. There a bench and slippery rocks but it’s beautiful to see year round. You can retrace your steps OR depending on company follow the rock steps up the side of the rock wall and cross over top of the falls (slippery and likely to get wet again). Follow this path up and you’ll once again be reunited with the original pathway.
