The Smoky Mountains are known for great hiking trails, with epic views and cascading waterfalls, but if you’ve ever seen a sign labeled “Quiet Walkway,” it’s worth your while to stop, especially if you have very small children and/or want a trail away from the crowds of the more popular trails in the Smokies.
One of these trails is the Riverview Quiet Walkway, located off 441, just over 2 miles from the Gatlinburg entrance. There is a parking area for about 4-5 cars, and a trail marker encouraging enjoyment of the surrounding forest while taking this wide, gentle trail. There are log benches available to sit if you need to stop and nurse or just want to watch the kids play, and the trail ends at half a mile at a stream that has incredibly smooth rocks, several species of salamanders, and a great opportunity for water play. Retrace your steps back to the car for an east one mile out-and-back.

The creek at the end of this path is perfect for water play. While parts of the creek can be fast moving after heavy rain, there are eddies perfect for even babies to splash in. The rocks here are extremely smooth and round, and salamanders are numerous for wildlife spotting.
