Helpful Trail Information
The trail at the right of the parking area, an old access road, is very easy for able bodied adults and definitely a great first hike for little legs. It is not wheel accessible when you get closer to the summit. The total length out and back is just under a mile. From the parking area, take the trail on the right, next to the forest sign. This is an old access road, which climbs to the summit in 0.4 miles. The trail follows a wide dirt/gravel/rocky path. After a short climb, it turns a corner and follows the edge of an open field, passing a good viewpoint at the top of the field. It turns a corner again and climbs up a grassy and rocky area to the summit. The trail is fairly steep, but extremely short. On the summit, there are panoramic views extending into Vermont, which are increased by climbing the fire tower. The path is wide so very easy to take breaks and get out of the way as needed. At the top you'll find loads of high bush blueberry bushes with are somewhat maintained. These large bushes hide some slight drop offs amongst the rocks at the top so keep an eye on wandering little ones that are prone to run and not look before leaping, it could be easy to jump and fall before realizing there is a drop. The fire tower at the top is able to be climbed but it has open railings, no children should climb it unaccompanied. This tower is on the NH Fire Tower Quest list-- find more info here: https://www.nh.gov/nhdfl/documents/tower-request-brochure.pdf When blueberries are in session bring containers and cash to leave in the honesty box near the trailhead!
What gear would you suggest a family bring along?
insect repellent, solid shoes, carriers, snacks, water, containers/cash for blueberries when in season
What baby or child hazards are there on this hike?
the gravel is sometimes loose in sections. The fire tower has open railings. There are some rocks with bigger drops that are hidden beneath the large bushes at the summit. Ticks/mosquitos.
