An easy out-of-town adventure just above Boise and past Bogus Basin ski area, Mores Mountain Interpretive Trail starts at about 6,600 feet and is a spectacular day trip that offers lush meadows of wildflowers in the spring and summer (as late as July), including sticky cinquefoil, scarlet gilia, sulphur buckwheat, lupine, and several species of penstemon. As you hike, you’ll find breathtaking views of the Sawtooth Mountain range to the east and Oregon’s Blue Mountains to the west.
Keep your eyes on the lookout for wildlife as this area is also home to numerous birds and butterflies. There’s a good chance if you’re looking for it, you’ll spot a redtailed hawk diving for diner in the deep purple lupine-filled meadows. You’re not likely to see mountain lions or bears, but they are out there.
The hike itself is toddler friendly and very walkable with a trail that skirts the top of Mores Mountain and numerous shaded benches along the way, making it perfect for new parents. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that the hike is fairly exposed. Be aware of weather and don’t plan to hike this is thunderstorms are expected. Hiking boots and a lightweight rain jacket are recommended in the summer.
Also there are seven overnight spots that are walk-in and fairly close together with limited vegetation screening each spot, so expect to be friendly with the neighbors. Also, be sure to bring water as there is limited, if any, water onsite.
