This is a nice, short hike that is good for little legs. It is an uphill hike, but don’t let that stop you. Our 3.5 yr old hikes it just fine. It is not a steep uphill hike. Even with it being muddy, it didn’t feel like you were just going up and up. It’s a beautiful hike, even in the winter when there are no leaves on the trees.
This hike does not start at the large Martin’s Fork parking lot, but instead by the spots across the street where there are some small parking spots off the road. The parking lot has a pit toilet, so if you or your kids are smell sensitive, that might be an issue. It’s a large bathroom and ADA accessible. No changing table. The trash cans are near the trail map. The trail starts on the Rough Trail and soon after crossing the first bridge you will see the trail marker for Military Wall Trail on the right, Head up that trail.
There is one spot that might be a little hard for those with little legs (and those with carriers). You can see it in the photos, a large rock that you have to step up, or for little kids, climb. The tree to the top and left was very helpful in stepping up (well scrambling up onto my knees) while carrying my younger son on my back in a SSC. But even with the mud, it was very easy for us to navigate up and then back down.
Once at the too, enjoy the fascinating rockface. Most likely, there will be rock climbers climbing that are fun to watch. There is a more open spot by the wall further up that has a number of large rocks that are fun for kids to play on and “climb”. Head back the way you came to leave. When you get back to the main trail you can turn right and continue down the Rough Trail to the next short hike off to the left to another rockface or continue as far as you’d like on the rough trail.
