1. PLACES / MATTHAEI BOTANICAL GARDENS
Matthaei Botanical Gardens is an Ann Arbor gem with a plethora of opportunities to explore nature and the outdoors. There are four nature trails, all well-marked, as well as a Children’s Garden, ornamental gardens, and an indoor conservatory. Summer and Winter hours vary. The Gardens are ADA accessible, which allow for strollers. However, the Nature Trails would be best for walkers, babycarrying, and off-road strollers. Trail length vary from .25 miles (Discovery Trail) to just under 2 miles. Dogs are not allowed on the Matthaei Botanical Gardens property. Parking is $1.70 per hour, but you can become a member and parking is free.

Helpful Trail Information

Creek / River, Mud Puddles, Natural Play Area, Picnic Area, Shaded Hike, Shelter, Visitor Center, and Wildlife Viewing Children’s Garden features a nature playground and community garden where, seasonally, children can taste the fruits and veggies. Fleming Creek runs along many of the trails. The big red barn along the yellow trail is a fun “half way” point. The .25 mile Discovery Trail has interactive signs and a small “outdoor classroom” for stories and relaxing. The conservatory allows you to “check out” adventure backpacks with scavenger hunts, binoculars, tape measures, and identification books.
