1. PLACES / ILLAHEE PRESERVE HERITAGE PARK
This trail system is wedged between the busy towns of Bremerton and Silverdale and offers over 5 miles of trails. The area is heavily wooded, with tons of rocks and logs for little ones to explore and climb. There are numerous routes to choose from, many of which run parallel to each other, so be sure to bring a map (or take a photo of the one at the trailhead) before you set out. The trail junctions are all marked well with numbers that correspond to the map, so this is a fun trail to help your kiddos build their map skills by letting them lead you along a route of their choice. Dogs are welcome on-leash and this trail is also open to mointain bikes.   Trail Map: https://www.kitsapgov.com/parks/Documents/Illahee_TrailMap.pdf

Helpful Trail Information

Mud Puddles, Picnic Area, Shaded Hike, Tree Climbing, and Wildlife Viewing This is a fantastic trail to visit during rainy season since the trees provide shelter from the worst of the rain, but there are still some epic puddles for kiddos (and adults) to enjoy. There are tons of fallen logs and large rocks for climbing and exploring. You can view a variety of wildlife from birds to squirrels to insects along with tons of different plant species (this trail is a must during mushroom season!). There are often painted rocks throughout this park as well.

Parking Details

There is a large parking lot located behind the Lowes off of Highway 303. It’s across the road from Kitsap Mental Heath Services. You will know you are at the right parking lot if it is paved (NOT the dirt lot).
