Gunpowder SP: Jerusalem Mill Village and Covered Bridge

Nestled on the north bank of the Little Gunpowder Falls, the historic Jerusalem Mill Village is a living time capsule! In 1772 Lee’s Merchant Mill opened its doors for business and laid the foundation for what would become the complete village before you. The success of Jerusalem Mill Village was due largely to the variety of useful services it provided to the local farming community. At its peak, the village boasted a grist mill, blacksmith shop, wheelwright, sawmill, general store, and even a post office! Take a hike through history and see what life was like in a time very different from your own! Start this hike by walking across the Gunpowder River. The steps coming off the bridge MAY be slippery. Once across, follow the trail markers up and down the forest area and find some nice views of the river itself. This forest side hike is ~0.35 miles. Follow the trail to the covered bridge. You will need to walk THROUGH the bridge so proceed with caution as it is an active roadway (Jericho Rd) and you do not have the right of way. Once across the metal guardrail opens on the left, enter back on the trail and head into the historic village. You’ll pass a small red bridge which takes you closer to the post office and general store. You can also turn right past the post office and walk down to see the ice house. Loop back towards the parking lot and you can visit the blacksmith shop. Cross the street to meet up with the visitors center and take a break by the fire pit/seating along the Gunpowder itself.
