Gunpowder SP: Pot Rocks & Saw Mill Trails

All the seasons Pot Rocks is enjoyable but summer is definitely the best. Park at the Kingsville/Rte 1 lot for Gunpowder State Park, and proceed to the back parking lot trail entrance. The trail goes downhill for about 25 yards then you’re on the main Gunpowder Trail (blue route). This VERY flat trail runs parallel to the Big Gunpowder all the way to Pot Rocks. It will most likely be muddy and PLEASE use caution post flooding and rain events as it is a low lying area. If you’re lucky enough for them to be in season, this area is also filled with Paw Paw trees and their fruit is custardy and delicious and safe to eat. Once you reach the Saw Mill Creek crossing….use caution and cross to the other side. The trail gets a little rockier but you are nearly there. At the trail marker pointing up for Lost Pond, head DOWN and you’ve made it to the infamous Pot Rocks. These “pots” within the rocks were formed long ago due to currents and water swirling and eroding the rock away. The current is swift here but there is also fun pools of water. As always with water use caution and heed any warnings about safety. After stopping for a snack (or maybe a swim) return back to the Saw Mill Creek crossing. Once across head up the yellow trail. This a family favorite as its less used than Pot Rocks so it also tends to have less (human) debris. Follow the yellow trail up through the hardwoods and at its height you’ll take in a beautiful hidden view of the Gunpowder. Return back to the blue trail and retrace your steps to the parking lot. From the lot to Pot Rocks is 1 mile each way. This section of the Saw Mill (yellow) is 0.6 miles. This hike described is 2.3 miles from parking lot to parking lot.
