Grizzly Peak is a loop trail outside of Ashland that features amazing views and an escape from summer heat. You can expect it to always be at least 20 degrees cooler than the valley! This trail is not accessible in winter and early spring months due to snow and ice on the access road.
The trail starts immediately uphill, and nearly all of the climbing is done in the first mile. After the first mile, the trail levels off and you can either choose to go right towards the highest point or left towards the overlook which is not the highest point but has the best view of the valley. If you want a shorter, 4 mile hike, head left to the view point and back.
The trail is generally safe, but based on the elevation gain of 900′ and 5 mi distance, littles will need to be carried at least for some part of the hike. The lookout spot has drop offs but it is a wide flat area, very safe for kids with parent supervision.
You’ll walk through some beautiful meadows, old fire scar areas, and rocky overlooks on this trail. There are views of McLoughlin, Mt Shasta, Ashland, and Medford as you loop around the mountain. So beautiful!
It can be windy and chilly on top, so pack some layers. Also the west side of the trail is without much shade, so sunscreen and hats are a must!
Plan for a 30 minute drive from Ashland and around 3 hours to complete this adventure.
