1. PLACES / ECHO LAKES
West of Echo Summit on US Route 50, Echo Lakes are the gateway to Desolation Wilderness. Hiking the shores of Upper and Lower Echo Lakes is a beautiful way to get there. Echo Lakes Trail is a 5.3 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near South Lake Tahoe, California that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from April until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Beautiful hike! Very exposed and important to bring sunscreen. Lots of views of the lake. LOTS of Scree (loose, sharp rocks), so it is important to wear good shoes with ankle support.   Submitted by Joe Linehan

Helpful Trail Information

Camping Nearby, Lake, and Viewpoint There is a boat taxi that runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day, barring any big snow years. If you have the time and the legs, try taking a boat taxi to the Lower Echo outlet and then hiking an extra 3 miles to Lake Aloha, one of Desolation Wilderness’ most iconic features. At the trailhead, there is a small store at Echo Chalet which sells cold drinks and snacks. Water taxi is $15. Watch out for PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) hikers (you will smell them before you seem them!)
