1. PLACES / DUTRO-ERNST WOODS
The 1 mile-long trail at Dutro-Ernst Woods meanders through prairie and woods. The trail is wide, ADA-accessible, and topped with crushed limestone, so it is not muddy, even after a rain. You can stroll past bluebird nest boxes, look for bat houses in the woods, or follow tracks and scat that the local coyotes leave overnight near the trail. Dutro-Ernst Woods is a 33 acre urban nature preserve on the site of the former Ernst Nursery. It is dedicated to Ruth Dutro, a local Biology teacher, who inspired countless students. With restoration, native plants and wildlife populations are increasing and beginning to thrive. Stop by often to observe seasonal transitions and changes in the land.   Submitted by: Kim McKenzie
