1. PLACES / DESOLATION TRAIL
The Desolation Trail is a beautiful hike through Mill Creek Canyon that ends at a fantastic overlook of the Salt Lake Valley. It’s a steady climb, but not crazy steep. The trail also has beautiful views of Mill Creek Canyon. In the fall, changing foliage is abundant. I have even heard of folks hiking this trail to see the sunset at the overlook and then hiking back down with headlamps. This trail is just long enough to be a little slow-going for toddlers. It’s best for babies being worn and for big kids, in my opinion.

Helpful Trail Information

Picnic Area, Viewpoint, and Wildlife Viewing There is a picnic area at the trailhead. In the spring, this trail may have lots of mosquitos. There is a little fairy tree about 1 mile into the trail where hikers have decorated it. Totally not LNT, but it’s a fun find for kids. Dogs must be on leash on even days and can be off leash on odd days. It is important to bring proper bags to clean up after your pets. There is a small parking lot at the trailhead. You must pay a $3 fee upon exiting Mill Creek Canyon. The trailhead for Thaynes Canyon shares the parking lot. Thaynes Canyon is a longer and steeper trail, so be aware of signs pointing you to the right trail.
