1. PLACES / GREAT BRIDGE BATTLEFIELD AND WATERWAYS HISTORIC PARK
Located at the site of the 1775 Battle of Great Bridge, this park features a 1.5mi walking loop that runs along the Intracoastal Waterway. Watch the Great Bridge Bridge open on the hour (visible from the parking lot), view boats as they go by, and enjoy a shaded walk in the woods. The trail is dirt/sand and has some exposed roots, and is best for a 3-wheel stroller. It is narrow in parts and may be difficult for a double stroller. The turnaround point in the loop allows you to stand underneath the high bridge on the 168 Bypass; kids like seeing the large structure and hearing the cars go by overhead. Beware of some graffiti, though. At one end of the loop there is a boardwalk and overlook that allow you to view the marshland and site of the original Great Bridge. A Visitor’s Center is currently under construction and slated to open Spring 2019. There are 2 porta potties in the parking lot. Thick mosquitoes make this trail largely inaccessible in the summertime, but it is great in the other seasons.
