Caw Caw Interpretive Center is a hidden gem in the Charleston area. Located in Ravenel, SC, Caw Caw Interpretive Center is part of the Charleston County Parks network. There are approximately 6 miles of trails, a nature exhibit, educational facility, picnic shelters and restrooms available at park center. There is also one outhouse farther out in the trail system. There are 8 different trails spanning 3 habitats, and they all intersect and overlap at different points. If you start at park center, you can see all that the park has to offer.
The Habitat Loop is the longest trail in the park at 3.6 miles and circles the entire perimeter of Caw Caw. You can start out in one of two directions and end up back at the park center. This Trail allows you to see all of the habitat types present at Caw Caw which include, Swamp, Bottom Land forest, and Marsh/Former Rice fields. The Habitat Loop overlaps some of the other trails and includes a mixture of smooth pack dirt, grass, boardwalk and occasional heavily rooted and uneven terrain. All terrain strollers can handle the trails, but there may be times when you might choose to take a young baby out of a stroller or find wearing a child in a carrier may be preferable.
Wild life sightings are often abundant at Caw Caw with everything from Alligators, Waterfowl, Birds of Prey and even the occasional Snake. Being a wildlife center, it’s important to stay on trail to avoid disturbing the animals.
Sections of trail are over boardwalk without a railing, or close to water, so a carrier or child harness might be a good idea for new walkers and toddlers.
