Helpful Trail Information

The Bruce Edes Memorial forest has many trails in the 34 acre tract of land that allow for a variety of loops or out and back. The The Dodge Public Library and the conservation commission have set up a story walk set up in a short loop on parts of the trails. It is about .25 mile loop. There are many other loops that travel along the river, some allow open access and could be dangerous with small children. The trails are slightly hilly sometimes slippery due to pine needles, lots of roots and rocks, but short and sweet. (I have set the difficulty rating as moderate, it is easy for most able bodied adults, but would be more difficult for new walkers or anyone with limited mobility due to the terrain)

What gear would you suggest a family bring along?

Baby/toddler carriers. Wheels are discouraged because of the roots. Depending on our group, it may be best to plan on wearing or carrying our youngest adventurers. Bug repellent of your choice. Sturdy footwear. Snacks/water

What baby or child hazards are there on this hike?

The terrain is well maintained but it is hilly with rocks and roots. The story walk trail does not go too close to the river, but if you choose to continue exploring the trails after our loop, be aware that there are some trails that lead right up to the water. To get to the actual trailhead from the VFW parking, we will be walking along the old rail road tracks-- this is easy to trip on and there are a couple of spots where the drop off from the railroad tracks are a bit steep, so young walkers should stay close to their grown ups. There are some patches of poison ivy, but the story walk doesn't go past those known spots. Ticks and mosquitos are possible
