1. PLACES / BLUE JOB MOUNTAIN
Blue Job Mountain is the second highest mountain in the Blue Hills of the southeastern Lakes Region, and home to one of NH’s sixteen active fire towers. The fire tower affords good views in almost all directions. The Blue Job Mountain Trail makes a nice loop hike. We suggest the side which climbs the old fire warden’s trail for ascent, as it is the more difficult one. To begin the hike, walk to the kiosk and turn right onto the south end of the loop. Soon after its beginning, the trail crosses a jeep road and begins climbing. It ascends on rough terrain, eventually becoming fairly steep. Near the summit, the trail leads out onto rock and climbs more gently through open areas to the fire tower. The summit, reached at 0.5 miles, is viewless, but climbing the tower reveals a wide vista of mostly flat land. Some directions are partially blocked by trees. The upper part of the descent route follows the jeep road, which leaves from the northwest side of the summit; some parts are paved to improve trail surface. In 0.2 miles from the summit, the trail reaches a communications tower in a clearing with a limited view. Turn right to leave the jeep road, as foot traffic on the lower part is prohibited. From here, the trail becomes easier, descending moderately 0.6 miles back to the parking area.
