Marshy Point Nature Center-Katie and Wil's+ Vernal Pond Eastern Loop

Baltimore County Park, Marshy Point, has a variety of flat (if not submerged) trails for even the littlest of legs. A tidal estuary, Marshy Points’ trails are designed to have the least impact on the ecosystem they surround, so the best idea when visiting is to come prepared to be wet or muddy. Combining Katie & Wil’s (K&T) trail with the Vernal Pond Eastern loop hikers can experience the ease of paved surfaces and the adventure of the trail. K&T is a paved, all-access point to point trail which crosses over the Minnow Branch Creek via boardwalk. To start this hike, look for the sign on the left of the Nature Centers main entrance. Collect “monkey balls” (Sweetgum fruit) along the trail to toss overboard into the creek as a way to entertain all ages. It may be hard to move the kids from that fun, so one way to do so is to point out the turtle tracks and other aquatic life along the way. Once across the bridge, go off the paved area to the right and follow the Vernal pond loop. Sometimes a muddy trail, you will almost always encounter a fallen log which is a great obstacle for little legs to crawl across. Keep your eyes peeled for shore birds and amazing fungus along the path.  Once you reach the raised plank boardwalk know you’re almost 1/2 way through the trail and you’ll soon see the bottom of upended trees (and their pits). The 1/2 way point is Marshy Point group camp site. This is the PERFECT spot to stop and take a rest, have a snack or let the kids play on stacked wood and log benches. You’re also at an old hunting blind and gorgeous view of the more open section of the creek. After the break, follow the dirt packed road to the paved section of the K&T trail. Turn left and follow to the Vernal pond teaming with frogs, salamanders, turtles (and snakes). We love to come to this section when its high tide in the summer and we’ll get our feet wet even staying on the trail. If you continue on the paved area you’ll cross back over the boardwalk bridge and make your way to the entrance. ADA Accessibility ONLY on K&T trail.
