1. PLACES / TOOTHPICK
Toothpick is a 1-mile trail that connects you to the Ashland Loop Road and other area trails. While it’s just 3 miles outside of town, it feels like you are deep in the woods. The trail is beautiful and shaded making it great for summer hiking. The trail starts uphill, and about 0.3 miles into the hike there is a picnic bench where you can take a break. From here, the trail narrows and continues uphill. You will pass a bench on your left at about the halfway point. A mile into the hike, you’ll arrive at Lamb Saddle. From here you can explore further by walking up or down the loop road, connecting to the caterpillar trail, or checking out the spur trail to an old mine shaft. If you’d like to turn back, it’s an easy 1-mile downhill hike to your car.
