1. PLACES / PENASQUITOS CANYON: PENASQUITOS WEST TO WAGON WHEEL CROSSING
This hike starts from the west entrance of Penasquitos Canyon (off Sorrento Valley Blvd) and heads out to Wagon Wheel Crossing. This crossing features a fun suspension bridge and a little creek area for the kids to explore. The trail itself is mostly wide and flat, but there is a rocky hill near the beginning that is not suitable for strollers. It is completely exposed with a little shade at the crossing. The trail starts at the end of the parking lot at the metal gate. Shortly, you will reach a T junction. Go left and head under Sorrento Valley Blvd. Follow the trail up and over a small, rocky hill before you head down into the canyon. You will see a small trail branch off to the left about a half a mile in, but continue straight on the main trail. After about another quarter of a mile you will see the sign and bridge for Wagon Wheel Crossing. We especially love hiking this trail near sunset, when we have spotted different types birds, coyotes, and deer.
