1. PLACES / MONAHANS SANDHILLS STATE PARK, TEXAS
With 4,000 acres of land, Monahans Sandhills State Park is a fun hidden gem in Texas that people might not think to visit for hiking; however, with little ones, this is a perfect landscape to play in because it’s a giant sandbox. This is not your typical hike; it’s more of an adventure. Plan to meet up at the picnic pavilion if you have others joining you, and encourage people to bring sand toys (digging toys, buckets, sleds). You can also rent sleds and some other toys at the park headquarters if you forget. As a group, you can hike around the dunes, but there is no official trail here, so your distance will have to be based on what your little hikers are up for. Sand can be challenging, so this hike requires carriers for nonwalkers or early walkers. Children can walk up the dunes but might need a hand here and there to get around.
