Mackworth Island Hiking Trail

This beautiful 1.25 mile loop trail with views of the Casco Bay takes about an hour to complete at a leisurely pace. Most of the trail is shaded with flat, packed dirt so all-terrain strollers should do just fine. Since the trail follows around the edge of the island, the land drops off into the bay with no guardrails or fencing (see pics) so I would recommend using a carrier or stroller for any tots who tend to run away or may not be good listeners yet. There are no steps or other barriers to wheelchairs on the main loop, but the small side trails down the steep slope to the shore may be inaccessible to some visitors. Restrooms located near the parking lot. Dogs on a leash welcome.

Beach, Fishing, Natural Play Area, Shaded Hike, Tree Climbing, Viewpoint, and Wildlife Viewing There are lots of great places to stop for a snack or explore on this trail. Enjoy little pebble beaches, fairy houses, a big swing overlooking the water, a jetty you can walk out on and several benches to rest along the way.

Parking Details

This trail is part of the Maine State Parks trail system so annual park passes are accepted here. Otherwise, there is a small fee…. Maine residents: $3 (non-residents: $4) Maine residents 65 and older: free Children 5 – 11 years old: $1.00 Children under 5: free Parking is limited on the island. If the lot is full, you can park on the mainland and walk over the bridge. Try to carpool or allow for some extra time if you have a scheduled meet-up with friends.
