The east side of Red Rock Canyon Open Space is not as popular as the other areas of the park, because there is a separate parking lot to access it. This area still offers great views of the park and of Garden of the Gods in the distance. This 3 mile loop is great for all-terrain/jogging strollers or for a carrier hike. Be sure to bring layers and sun protection, as this route doesn’t offer much shade/protection. This area is popular for mountain bikers, so please be aware. Also, do not leave valuables in your car. This trail is not ADA friendly. Leashed dogs are allowed.
From the parking lot you will start on the Lower Hogback trail, which is a bit steep and rocky at first, but then opens to a wide, nicely graveled trail. You will go to the right at the first intersection, which will follow the Lower Hogback trail. At the next intersection you will take a left to Hogback Valley trail. This portion of the trail is 1.4 miles long. You will come along an intersection for 26th street access, but stay to the right on Hogback Valley trail. After 1.4 miles, the next intersection will bring you to Lion Trail, take a right onto Lion Trail. Follow Lion Trail until you come to the intersection to Red Rock Rim trail. Take a right onto Red Rock Rim trail. Continue on Red Rock Rim trail until you reach the Lower Hogback trail, where you will take another right. Follow this trail back down to the starting point/parking lot.
