1. PLACES / LAVA RIVER CAVE
Need to escape the heat or want to hike somewhere different, check out Lava Rive Cave! This cave is a constant 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Open May-September, this trail is a 1 mile in and 1 mile out hike. Only a few places where you need to crouch a little, otherwise a very large cave, no need to worry about claustrophobia. Plan ahead, composting toilets before entering the cave, but nothing once you are in. Bring a flashlight, or rent a high powered one at the booth when checking in for $5. Some stairs and places with uneven footing, but the majority is a sandy path. The parking lot can fill up on weekends during the summer, plan to arrive at opening (9am) or shortly before closing (5pm) to grab a space. Admittance to the cave is closed after 4pm. Check the website for more specific hours of operation.
