Gunpowder SP: Hereford South/Masemore

Park in the large lot and head down the gate to the right. Follow this semi paved road until JUST before the clearing, trail breaks on the left. Follow this single track trail down and around until crossing a small stream and you’ll head gradually uphill. At the top of this ridgeline you’re within the Masemore Hemlock Ravine. Walk along this ridgeline (and enjoy the mountain laurel if in bloom!), when the trail bend comes to an intersection, turn downhill on the right towards another creek. Follow this alongside the creek and be thrilled there’s some hemlocks still around. You’ll follow down and past rock outcropping, crossing the small stream until you reach the Gunpowder itself. You can continue on this trail which will run parallel to the Gunpowder or you can return to the car. http://dnr.maryland.gov/wildlife/Pages/NaturalAreas/Central/Masemore-Hemlock-Ravines.aspx If you’d like to take a snack break, instead of heading right to go back to your car on the paved trail (you’ll have retraced your steps), turn left and follow the paved road downhill. This is a scout group campground and lots of space to sit, Run and play.
