1. PLACES / DONNER TUNNELS, TRUCKEE, CA
This 2.9 mile hike takes you through an old railroad tunnel in Northern California. It is considered an easy route, as the entire hike has very little elevation. Be prepared with good shoes due to water in the tunnels, and there is little light during this hike so headlamps are a must. While this hike can be fun and exciting for a lot of kids, it can sometimes be scary, too! In between the tunnels you will enjoy views of the Sierra Nevadas and Donner Lake, making it a "must hike" destination for the area.

Helpful Trail Information

This hike is best for a front, hip, or backpack carrier for littles! I would not recommend strollers as you will have an extremely bumpy and unenjoyable ride.

What gear would you suggest a family bring along?

Headlamps/flashlights/glowsticks are key for this hike!! The tunnels can also get very wet so I'd recommend proper waterproof shoes and warm clothing as it is very chilly and dark.

What baby or child hazards are there on this hike?

This trail goes along a pretty steep cliff (in between the tunnels), so please ensure kids do not wander away from the group. The tunnels are also extremely dark, and you cannot always see the entrance or exit.

Parking Details

The parking for this is directly across the street from Donner Ski Ranch, at the top of Donner Pass Rd. Once you take a left onto Sugarbowl road, you will then go past the parking lot to find the entrance. If you go to AllTrails and navigate through there, you can't go wrong!
