Past flooding over the Coralville Dam exposed the Devonian-era bedrock, leaving visible fossils and a fantastic area for exploration. There is nearby camping and trails, managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

A dedicated lot is available off Prairie Du Chein. Please note that map apps, when using the address provided by the USACE, may take you to the managment building on the northeast side of the dam. The fossil gorge itself is on the southwest side of the dam; please pay attention to signage.

Additional Helpful Information

There is a sidewalk to the fossil gorge area, but it is best explored by clambering over the small rocks and weaving among the streams/shallow pools left by rainfall.
