1. PLACES / CROWDERS MOUNTAIN STATE PARK - BACKSIDE TRAIL
Get ready to go up at Crowders Mountain on the Backside Trail! This strenuous 2 mile out and back trail is all about elevation, with a 650ft+ ascent over just one mile. Also, be prepared for a leg workout as there are 336 wooden steps just before you reach the summit. Once at the top you are rewarded with a beautiful view. On a clear day you can see the skyline of Charlotte about 25 miles away. The top is a mix of rocks and trees to explore. You can take a short walk to the tower lookout, switch to another trail or simply just relax. Once finished, prepare to descend starting with the wooden stairs again. This trail is very popular on the weekends and the small lot tends to fill up quickly. So, go early or through the week for best chance at parking. Please note that at the top there are steep drop-offs at the edge.
