1. PLACES / CHESTNUT RIDGE HERITAGE PRESERVE
There is just one main out and back trail  in Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve that will go along a creek at the beginning and end at the South Pacolet River. There is plenty of space to rest and play along the river bank, or even splash in the water. The trail itself is well maintained, without too many rocks and roots. There are some bridges and stairs. There are a few places along the trail with drop offs, but generally the trail is wide enough for kids to walk safely. The total elevation gain is about 1,000 feet, but it does not come all at once. The steepest part is right after returning back from the river. Carriers are recommended for kids who might have trouble with the distance or uphill. The path down to the river is fairly straight forward. Although after about a mile you will hit an unmarked intersection. Turn right towards the small bridge. You’ll come across two more trail intersections. Continue straight at both, following the signs that say “river.”
