1. PLACES / CASH LAKE TRAIL - PATUXENT RESEARCH REFUGE - SOUTH TRACT
The Cash Lake trail is a mainly flat, mixed surface trail that is approximately two miles. Start exploring at the visitors center, then hop on the trail just outside the left of the building. The trail loops around Cash Lake including two water walkways to get you up close and personal with all the wildlife. The back half of the trail is a great area to take a break if needed at the pier which is partially covered for shade, as well as restrooms (in season). The back half will also provide the most elevation gain but is nothing a toddler couldn’t handle. Some choose to navigate the trail with an all terrain stroller, but I would suggest a carrier if needed. During the rainy season be prepared to get muddy on the back half. Parts of Cash Lake trail beyond the fishing pier may be closed seasonally during wet conditions and to avoid disturbance of nesting waterfowl. During spring and early summer is a good time to see tons of frogs.
